On July 4th, 1776, the world changed forever. Leaders of thirteen colonies came together to reject the tyrannical government of Great Britain and sought after a new, free nation. The founding fathers were diverse in background, career, and lifestyles. But, one thing is for sure – their goal was unity.
The framers of the Declaration put forth a few goals for the new nation: Life, Liberty, Opportunity, and Democracy. They desired a new form of government that would restore and protect the individual rights taken from them by the Parliament in Westminster. They wanted home rule, and they wanted everyone to have the opportunity to participate in government. The Founding Fathers were trailblazers in this radical form of political thought, and because of their boldness, their ideas have held on.
Many people today say that the original vision for America has been lost and that America is no longer great. This could not be further from the truth. America’s greatness does not come from any of its leaders. No, America’s greatness comes from the ideas that make up its foundation. Now more than ever we need to examine our roots. The principles of freedom, opportunity, have and will forever reign true in America.
America will always be great because its citizens will always have the freedom to think and speak.
This was the original vision that the Founding Fathers held: that people would have the ability to say or think anything that they want about their government. If you’ve ever seen a protest or a march, you know that this maxim is alive and well. People today can say the things they wish about the government or its leaders because of the principles that the Founding Fathers declared for you and me.
The days of tyrannical overreach were numbered, and the founding fathers sought to recognize the individual’s ability to act freely, so long as they do not infringe on another’s liberty. The right to bear arms, to worship however you please, along with the rights provided to keep the government from becoming tyrannical will never waiver. Now more than ever, people are living freely by these and many other principles. People can protect themselves and their families with firearms. People can worship whatever God they wish, or none at all. You have the right to your property and to keep the government from unreasonable searches. All citizens can act in these ways if they wish, just as the Founding Fathers had envisioned.
The founders also wanted economic opportunity. The ‘American Dream’ was truly the goal that the Founding Fathers wanted for the everyday American. Anybody can succeed and improve their life. People can come from the humblest of circumstances, from whatever ethnic background, and they have the same ability to succeed if they are willing to put in the effort.
We have a lot to thank our Founding Fathers for this Independence Day. These men were true patriots, who formed a government that protected our God-given and natural rights. The Declaration laid the foundation that allowed those same men to secure these rights thirteen years later in the Constitution. On this Fourth of July; we’re able to pursue the values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness because of the boldness of these men, 241 years ago. America will always be great, and the founding fathers have ensured that for days to come.
